How do tourist boards and DMOs get a destination recommended by AI?
Updated By Akkrev
How tourist boards and DMOs shape the way ChatGPT and Google AI describe and recommend a whole destination, and how to check what AI says.
Destinations get recommended by AI when trusted sources describe them clearly for the trips people plan, such as a weekend break, a rainy day or an autumn foliage trip. DMOs shape a lot of that content, which makes them one of AI’s most important sources about a place.
Destinations compete for AI’s shortlist the way businesses do. DMOs shape how AI describes a whole place.
What people ask AI
- “Best weekend break in the UK in November?”
- “Where to go in the US for fall foliage?”
- “Is Glasgow worth visiting?”
- “Things to do in Asheville in winter?”
Where AI gets its answers
- Official sites. National and regional tourist boards.
- Travel press. Guides, magazines and newspapers.
- Reddit and forums. Traveller opinions.
- Business listings. The places that make up the destination.
What decides who gets named
- Clear, current official content on seasons, events and transport.
- Pages for trip types travellers ask about.
- Helping local businesses get their own facts right.
- Monitoring how AI describes the destination.
