How does AI recommend hotels? A guide for owners
Updated
If you want AI to recommend your hotel, start by understanding the guest's question and the information in the answer. A search-enabled assistant can retrieve pages about properties and use them to suggest places to stay. This guide is for hotel owners and managers: how recommendations are formed, what to inspect when your hotel is missing, and which website information to improve first.
How does AI recommend hotels?
When web search is enabled, assistants can retrieve pages and use them in an answer. Other answers may come from model memory. The app, question, location, account and search settings can change what is returned, so inspect each answer's sources rather than assuming every assistant uses the same index.
Your own website is one possible source alongside listings, reviews and editorial coverage. Which source matters depends on the question. A general local-search study does not establish the source mix for your hotel's guests; save the citations from your own questions.
What should a hotel owner make clear?
Start with practical details that help a guest check whether your hotel suits their request:
- Clear facts it can quote: location, room types, prices from, parking, pets, accessibility, check-in times
- The same facts everywhere: your website, Google, TripAdvisor and the booking sites
- Answers to the exact questions guests ask, not just marketing copy
- Other sources that mention you: press, guides, reviews and local sites
- A website it can actually read, and a way to book you directly
Why independent hotels get skipped or misquoted
A missing recommendation can have several explanations: the property may not fit the request, a useful page may not be retrieved, or the answer may use incomplete information. Check the actual question, answer and sources before deciding which explanation applies.
Make room and policy information available on useful public pages alongside images, PDFs and booking widgets. If a relevant page cannot be accessed, investigate that specific restriction rather than assuming the whole website is blocked.
From recommendation to booking
Being named, receiving a visit and completing a booking are separate outcomes. An assistant may recommend a hotel but cite a third-party page. A booking agent still has to find availability, understand the total and cancellation terms, and obtain the traveller's approval where required.
Test the public path from your homepage to a priced room, stopping before a reservation. Record the exact step that failed. A working booking link is useful evidence of usability; it does not prove that AI will recommend you or that a guest will convert.
Check where you stand
You can see the problem yourself in a few minutes:
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity the questions your guests ask. Are you recommended? Are the facts right? Where does the link go?
- Ask an AI agent to find a room on your own website for future dates, stop before any reservation or payment, and record where it gets stuck.
- In your analytics, look for visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
How Akkrev helps
Akkrev samples four API model families weekly, saves the answers and citations, and shows who is recommended. Review website priorities, confirm venue facts and check public updates. Grow and Scale can prepare supported WordPress page updates for approval, plus article drafts and publishing. You manage your own listings and reviews.
A separate hotel agent booking service tests the public booking flow and scopes the changes it needs. Its audit and project fees are separate from the visibility subscription. Read the methodology and current pricing before choosing either service.
Questions
How do I get my hotel recommended by ChatGPT?
Publish useful room and policy information, keep your managed profiles accurate and check answers to unbranded guest questions. Save the facts and sources returned. Akkrev offers weekly sampled reports and content tools, but neither website changes nor a subscription can guarantee a recommendation.
Why does ChatGPT give the wrong price or parking details for my hotel?
An answer may use outdated or conflicting information, or make an error. Inspect its cited sources and compare them with your current room and policy pages before deciding what to correct. If no source explains the mistake, do not assume its cause.
Can AI agents book my hotel directly?
Some agents can use public booking websites, but capability varies by agent, property, booking engine and task. Test your own flow and stop before confirmation. A recommendation does not establish that an agent can complete a reservation.
