Restaurant SEO for AI search in 2026: what actually works
Updated By Akkrev
How restaurants get found on Google, Maps, ChatGPT and Gemini in 2026. What to fix first, which UK and US sources AI trusts, and DIY vs tool vs agency.
Key points
- Restaurant SEO now covers four places: Google search, Google Maps, Google's AI and assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini.
- They overlap. Your Google profile, a text menu, consistent listings and detailed reviews help all four.
- AI adds two things classic SEO underplayed: being described for specific questions and being mentioned by guides and press.
- In the UK, TripAdvisor, OpenTable, SevenRooms, Time Out and local guides turn up often. In the US, Yelp, OpenTable, Resy and The Infatuation do.
- The best solution for most independents is doing the basics well and tracking AI answers weekly, not a big agency retainer.
Google Maps
Still the biggest for 'near me'. Your Business Profile is the asset.
Google search
Your website ranks for your name, dishes and occasions in your area.
Google's AI
AI Overviews and AI Mode lean heavily on Google's own listings for restaurants.
ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity
Name a few places per question, drawing on listings, reviews, guides and websites.
Restaurant SEO in 2026 means being found in four places at once: Google search, Google Maps, Google’s AI answers and assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini. The good news is that they overlap. A complete Google profile, a text menu on your website, identical details across listings, detailed reviews and mentions in local guides help in all four. What AI adds is the need to be clearly described for the specific questions diners ask, and to be talked about by sources AI trusts.
Why it changed
BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found 45% of US consumers had used AI for a local business recommendation in the past year, up from 6%. And AI rarely gives ten options. It names three to five restaurants and many diners choose from those. Local Falcon found the top 10% of US restaurants took 74.5% of all visibility in Google’s AI, compared with 54% on Google Maps. AI concentrates attention on fewer places.
The four places, and what each one reads
1. Google Maps
Still the biggest source for “near me”. Your Google Business Profile decides it: category, hours, attributes such as outdoor seating or vegan options, photos, menu, reviews and your replies.
2. Google search
Your website ranks for your name and, with good pages, for dishes, occasions and your area. A fast, mobile-friendly site with your menu in text and clear location details is the base.
3. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google says there are no special requirements beyond normal Search eligibility. In practice, Google’s AI leans heavily on Google’s own data for restaurants. Local Falcon found 48.6% of the sources AI Overviews cited for restaurants were Google’s own listings. See how to appear in Google AI Overviews for restaurants.
4. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
These run a web search and read listings, reviews, guides, booking platforms and websites. They reward places that are described for the exact question and mentioned by others. See how ChatGPT recommends restaurants.
UK vs US: the sources that turn up most
| UK | US | |
|---|---|---|
| Listings and reviews | Google, TripAdvisor | Google, Yelp |
| Booking platforms | OpenTable, SevenRooms, DesignMyNight, Resy | OpenTable, Resy, Tock |
| Guides and press | Time Out, Hot Dinners, Harden’s, The Good Food Guide, Michelin, local papers | The Infatuation, Eater, Time Out, Michelin, city magazines |
Check which of these actually appear in AI answers for your city. It varies by place and by question.
What to fix first
- Facts. Name, address, phone, hours and holiday hours identical on Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp or TripAdvisor, booking platforms and your website.
- Menu. A text menu on your website with prices and dietary labels. PDFs and photos are hard for AI to read. See can AI read your menu.
- Descriptions. Say what you are known for and who you suit: dishes, cuisine, private dining, kids, dogs, late opening, step-free access.
- Reviews. A steady flow of recent reviews that mention dishes and occasions. Reply to them.
- Mentions. A local guide, food writer or newspaper piece. Ahrefs found mentions on other sites correlate far more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks do.
- Crawling. Make sure your website does not block AI crawlers. Try our free AI crawler check.
DIY, tool or agency?
- Do it yourself if you have one site and a few hours a month. Most of the work is listings, menu and reviews.
- Use a tracking tool to see which diner questions name you, who wins instead and which sources decide it. This is where most owners are blind today.
- Hire help if you run several sites or have no time. Ask any agency what they will measure, and be wary of guaranteed rankings in ChatGPT. Nobody can promise them.

What to measure
- Google Maps views, calls and direction requests.
- Search clicks to your website and menu page.
- Visits from ChatGPT and other AI tools in Google Analytics.
- How often AI names you for 10 to 20 fixed diner questions, checked weekly.
The last one is the newest and hardest to do by hand. Akkrev samples those questions every week across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok models. See AI search optimisation for restaurants or plans.
Questions
What is the best way to improve restaurant SEO for AI search in the UK?
Get your Google Business Profile, website menu and listings on TripAdvisor, OpenTable or SevenRooms complete and identical. Make sure your website says the dishes, dietary options and occasions you are good for in plain text. Earn steady, detailed reviews and local press. Then track a fixed set of diner questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google each week.
How do I get my restaurant to show up in AI search results?
AI names restaurants it can find, read and see confirmed elsewhere. Make your menu readable text, keep facts consistent across listings, describe what you are known for and get mentioned by guides and local press.
Is normal SEO still worth doing for restaurants?
Yes. AI assistants and Google's AI build answers from the same websites, Google profiles and listings that local SEO improves. Google says no special optimisation is needed for its AI features beyond normal Search eligibility.
Should a restaurant hire an AI SEO agency?
Single-site restaurants rarely need a retainer. The work is mostly accurate listings, a good menu page, reviews and press. Restaurant groups with several sites often benefit from one person or partner owning it across locations.
