Does your Google Business Profile matter for ChatGPT and Google AI?
Updated By Akkrev
Google's AI leans on Business Profiles for local answers, and other assistants read them too. The fields that matter most for hotels, restaurants and cafés.
Key points
- For local questions, Google's AI starts with Business Profiles. In one hotel study, 99.7% of the sources AI Mode cited were Google's own pages.
- Google's own guidance for AI features says to keep your Business Profile information up to date.
- ChatGPT doesn't read Google directly, but your profile shapes reviews, maps data and search results other tools pick up.
- The fields that matter most: category, hours, attributes, description, menu or rooms, photos, reviews and replies.
- One wrong field, like a forgotten 'temporarily closed', can remove you from AI answers entirely.
Category
As specific as possible: 'Seafood restaurant', 'Boutique hotel', 'Coffee shop'.
Attributes
Dog-friendly, outdoor seating, Wi-Fi, step-free, vegan options, parking.
Hours
Regular and special hours, kept current, with no old closures.
Reviews and replies
Recent, detailed reviews and owner replies that correct facts.
Your Google Business Profile matters a great deal for AI. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode lean almost entirely on Google’s own data for local questions, and Google’s guidance for its AI features specifically says to keep your Business Profile up to date. ChatGPT and other assistants don’t read Google directly, but your profile shapes the reviews, maps data and search results they pick up. For a hotel, restaurant or café it is the single most important listing to get right.
How much Google’s AI relies on it
- In Local Falcon’s 2026 study of 998 US hotels, 99.7% of the sources Google’s AI Mode cited were Google’s own pages, such as Business Profiles and Google Hotels.
- In its restaurant study, 48.6% of the sources Google’s AI Overviews cited were Google’s own listings.
For local questions on Google, your profile is the evidence.
The fields that matter most
- Primary category. Be specific: “Seafood restaurant” beats “Restaurant”, “Bed & breakfast” beats “Hotel” if that’s what you are. It decides which questions you are considered for.
- Secondary categories. Add what else you genuinely are: “Brunch restaurant”, “Cocktail bar”, “Wedding venue”.
- Hours and special hours. Including bank holidays and seasonal closures. Clear old closures straight away.
- Attributes. Tick everything true: dog-friendly, outdoor seating, Wi-Fi, step-free entrance, accessible toilet, vegan options, reservations, parking, EV charging.
- Description. Plain sentences about what you are, what you’re known for and who you suit.
- Menu, services or rooms. Add them, with prices where you can.
- Photos. Recent, real and showing what guests ask about: rooms, terrace, dishes, step-free entrance.
- Reviews and replies. A steady flow of recent reviews, with replies that correct any wrong facts.
Common problems that knock you out
- A “temporarily closed” status left on after a refurbishment or holiday.
- Duplicate listings, or an old business at your address still marked open.
- A wrong or vague category.
- An old address or phone number after a move.
- Hours that differ from your website and other listings.
Any of these can make AI leave you out or describe you wrongly. See why ChatGPT says a restaurant is closed.
What about ChatGPT and other assistants?
ChatGPT uses third-party search providers and its own crawler, not Google Search. Industry tests point to Bing data for local results. So:
- Keep Bing Places and Apple Business Connect as complete as your Google profile.
- Keep Yelp, TripAdvisor and booking listings consistent with Google.
- Your Google reviews still matter, because review volume and wording are repeated across the web.
Check it in five minutes
- Search your venue on Google Maps on a phone, signed out.
- Compare every field with reality.
- Search a guest question in Google AI Mode, such as “dog-friendly café near [landmark]”, and see whether you are named.
- Note which attributes the winners have that you don’t.
Akkrev tracks the guest questions that matter to you every week across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok models and shows which sources each answer uses. See plans or how to get your hotel into Google AI Overviews.
Questions
Does Google Business Profile affect ChatGPT recommendations?
Indirectly. ChatGPT uses third-party search providers and its own crawler, not Google Search. But your profile drives reviews, maps data and search results that other tools copy. Keep Bing Places and Apple Business Connect just as complete for assistants outside Google.
Do Google reviews affect AI restaurant recommendations?
Yes. Google's AI reads Google reviews directly, and research across hotels and restaurants shows places with more reviews are named far more often. The words in reviews also tell AI what you are good for.
What's the most important Google Business Profile field for AI?
Your primary category, because it decides which questions you are even considered for. Then hours, attributes and an accurate description.
Does posting Google updates help with AI?
There is no published evidence that posts move AI answers. They can keep your profile current and give guests reasons to visit. Spend more time on categories, attributes, hours and reviews.
