Do I need a website to be recommended by AI?

Updated By Akkrev

Can a café, food truck or B&B get recommended by ChatGPT or Google AI without a website? What AI reads instead and the minimum site worth having.

Key points

  • Not strictly. AI can recommend you from your Google profile, listings and reviews alone, especially in Google's own AI.
  • But a website widens the questions you can win. In one large study, business websites were the single biggest source AI cited.
  • Without a site, AI has no place to check your menu, rooms, prices or policies in your own words.
  • A simple one-page site with your facts as plain text covers most of the gap.
What AI can use with and without a website

  • Without a website

Google profile, Apple and Bing listings, Yelp, TripAdvisor, booking sites, reviews, social posts.

  • With a simple website

All of the above, plus your menu, rooms, prices, policies and story in your own words, which AI can quote.

You don’t strictly need a website to be recommended by AI. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI can name a café, food truck or small B&B from its Google profile, listings and reviews alone. But a website widens the questions you can win. Without one, AI has nowhere to read your menu, rooms, prices or policies in your own words, so it tends to name you only for broad questions or not at all.

What AI uses when you have no website

  • Google Business Profile. Google’s own AI relies on it heavily. In a 2026 study of 998 US hotels, 99.7% of the sources Google’s AI Mode cited were Google’s own pages.
  • Other listings. Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, TripAdvisor and Foursquare feed maps and AI tools beyond Google.
  • Booking and ordering platforms. OpenTable, Resy, Booking.com, Airbnb, Deliveroo and Uber Eats pages carry menus, rooms and prices.
  • Reviews. What guests write, especially details like “great for laptops” or “lovely garden”.
  • Mentions. Local guides, food blogs and newspaper pieces.

If all of these are complete and consistent, AI can recommend you.

Where a website still makes the difference

The largest public study of AI citations, from Yext, counted 6.8 million citations across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Business websites were the biggest single source at 44%, just ahead of listings at 42%. For unbranded questions with a clear factual answer, such as “which cafés near King’s Cross open at 7am”, websites and local pages made up nearly 60% of citations.

A website lets you:

  • Answer specific questions. Dog policy, step-free access, gluten-free options, parking, kids’ menu, room sizes.
  • Show your menu or rooms as text, with prices, which AI can match to budget questions.
  • Control the facts. Listings get edited by others. Your site is the version you own.
  • Get your own page cited and linked, instead of a booking site that takes a commission.

The minimum website worth having

One page is enough to start.

  1. Name, full address, phone and email, written exactly as on Google.
  2. Opening hours as text, including seasonal changes.
  3. A text menu or room list with prices. Not a PDF or photo.
  4. The details guests ask about: dogs, accessibility, parking, dietary options, outdoor seating, wifi.
  5. A clear way to book, order or enquire.
  6. A short “about” paragraph that says what you are known for.
  7. Settings that do not block AI crawlers. Check with our free AI crawler check.

Is a social page enough?

Instagram and TikTok help people discover you and can surface in AI answers, but much of their content is hard for AI search to read reliably, and posts quickly drop out of view. Keep posting, but don’t rely on social as your only home online. More in Instagram, TikTok and AI discovery.

How to check where you stand

Ask ChatGPT and Gemini, in a temporary chat, two kinds of question: your venue by name, and a guest question you should win. If AI gets your facts wrong or never names you, see why isn’t my business showing up in ChatGPT.

Akkrev tracks the questions your guests ask every week and shows which sources AI uses for you and your competitors. Grow and Scale plans also prepare article drafts and page updates for your website. See plans.

Questions

Can my café be recommended by ChatGPT without a website?

Yes, it can happen if your Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp and TripAdvisor listings are complete and you have plenty of reviews. You will usually only be named for broad questions like 'coffee near the station'. A website helps you win specific ones like 'oat milk flat white and good wifi'.

Is an Instagram page enough instead of a website?

Usually not. Much of Instagram is hard for AI search to read, and posts move quickly. Keep Instagram, but put your core facts somewhere stable and readable.

What is the minimum website AI needs?

One page with your name, address, phone, opening hours, a text menu or room list with prices, key details such as dog-friendly or accessible, and a link to book or order. Make sure AI crawlers are not blocked.

Do I need a website for Google's AI Overviews?

Not to appear. Google's AI leans heavily on Google's own listings for local results. A website gives Google more to work with and is needed if you want your own page cited.
