ChatGPT ads for hotels and restaurants: are they worth it?
Updated By Akkrev
How ChatGPT ads work, what hotels have paid per click so far, who can see them, and when an independent hotel, restaurant or café should try them.
Key points
- ChatGPT ads appear below the answer, labelled as sponsored. OpenAI says they do not change who ChatGPT recommends.
- Early hotel campaigns reported clicks at around $3 to $3.50 and click-through rates of 1.6% to 1.9%.
- Ads only reach people on the Free and Go plans, and the platform is still in beta.
- For most independents, getting into the free organic answer comes first. Ads can come later, with a test budget.
- Hotels with good direct-booking margins are the best fit today. Most single-site cafés are not.
- 1
Check the organic answer first
If ChatGPT already names you, ads add less. If it never does, fix that first.
- 2
Know your margin
A $3 click needs to turn into enough bookings or covers to pay back.
- 3
Track it properly
Use UTM tags and separate GA4 reporting before you spend.
- 4
Test small
A short, capped test on your highest-value questions. Then decide.
ChatGPT ads are labelled sponsored placements shown below ChatGPT’s answer. They do not change which hotels or restaurants ChatGPT recommends. Early hotel campaigns paid around $3 to $3.50 per click. For most independent venues the free, organic answer is the better first target, and ads are worth a small test only once you know you can measure the bookings they bring.
How ChatGPT ads work
OpenAI announced ads in January 2026 and started with users in the US. Its stated rules:
- Ads appear at the bottom of an answer when there is a relevant sponsored product or service.
- Ads are clearly labelled and kept separate from the answer.
- Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives.
- Conversations are not shared with advertisers.
- Ads are shown on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and business plans are ad-free.
UK agencies reported ads appearing in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand from June 2026.
What hotels have seen so far
Cogwheel Marketing, a US hotel marketing agency, published early results in August 2026, based on conditions at the end of July:
- Cost per click: $3 to $3.50 on average. Bids under about $3 rarely served.
- Click-through rate: 1.6% to 1.9%.
- Budget: no overall minimum on cost per click, with a $25 minimum daily budget.
- Targeting: location down to metro area, customer lists of 25,000 or more, and optional “context hints” that steer which conversations the ad matches.
- Engagement: visitors from ads engaged less than visitors from organic ChatGPT answers.
- Caveat: the ad manager was in beta and changing about every two weeks.
These are one agency’s numbers from one period. Treat them as a starting point, not a forecast.
Is it worth it for your venue?
Likely worth a test:
- Independent hotels with healthy direct-booking margins, where one booking covers many clicks.
- Hotels that already appear in organic answers for some questions and want to cover the rest.
- Restaurant groups with several sites and a central marketing budget.
Probably not yet:
- Single-site restaurants and cafés, where a $3 click is expensive against one cover.
- Any venue that cannot yet see ChatGPT traffic in its analytics.
- Any venue that never appears in the organic answer. The ad will be the only place you show up, and guests tend to trust the answer more.
Ads vs the organic answer
The organic answer reaches every ChatGPT user, costs nothing per click and keeps working while your listings, reviews and website stay strong. The same work also helps you on Google, Gemini and Maps.
An ad reaches only Free and Go users, stops when the budget stops and sits below the recommendation, not inside it.
That is why the order matters. First, find out whether ChatGPT names you for the questions your guests ask. Read can you pay ChatGPT to recommend you and why AI recommends your competitors. Then decide whether ads fill a real gap.
Before you spend anything
- Set up ChatGPT traffic tracking in Google Analytics so you can see organic and paid visits separately.
- Write down the 10 questions that bring you your most valuable guests.
- Check which of those ChatGPT already answers with your name.
- Run a short, capped test on the questions where you are missing.
- Compare cost per booking with your OTA commission or other ad channels.
Akkrev tracks whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok models name you for your guest questions every week. That tells you where you already win for free and where an ad might fill a gap. See plans.
Questions
Do ChatGPT ads help my hotel get recommended in the answer?
No. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. The ad is a separate, labelled slot below the answer.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost for hotels?
One hotel marketing agency reported average clicks of $3 to $3.50 and a minimum daily budget of $25 in mid 2026. Prices and rules were changing every few weeks during the beta, so check current terms before you plan.
Are ChatGPT ads available in the UK?
Ads launched in the US in early 2026. UK agencies reported ads being shown in the UK from June 2026. Check OpenAI's ad platform for the current list of countries.
Should my restaurant advertise on ChatGPT?
For most single-site restaurants and cafés, not yet. Diners rarely plan far ahead and the cost per click is high for a single cover. Get into the free answer first and revisit ads once you can measure AI traffic.
