Why does AI recommend my competitors and not me?
Updated By Akkrev
Why ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI recommend other hotels, restaurants or cafés instead of yours. The six usual reasons and how to find yours.
Key points
- AI names the places it can find, match to the question and trust. It is rarely about quality alone.
- The most common reason: your competitor is described for the question and you are not.
- More reviews and outside mentions make a competitor a safer pick for AI.
- Unreadable menus, blocked crawlers and facts that disagree across sites push you out.
- The fastest way to find your reason is to open the sources AI cites for your competitors.
Described for the question
Their pages and reviews say "dog-friendly" or "private dining". Yours do not.
Mentioned more often
Local guides, press and more recent reviews.
Easier to read
Menus and rooms as text, not PDFs, images or booking widgets.
Facts that agree
Same name, address and hours on every site.
Up to date
No old closure notice, former name or last season's hours.
On the platforms AI uses
Complete Google, Yelp, TripAdvisor and booking listings.
AI recommends your competitors when it can find them, match them to the guest’s question and trust them more than you. In most cases the competitor is simply better documented: their website, listings and reviews say exactly what the guest asked for, and more sites mention them.
It is one of the most common questions hotel, restaurant and café owners ask. The answer is almost always one of the six reasons below.
1. They are described for the question and you are not
A guest asks for a “dog-friendly hotel in the Cotswolds” or “a restaurant with a private dining room in Leeds”. AI names places whose pages, listings and reviews mention that detail. If yours does not say it anywhere, you are left out, even if you welcome dogs or have the room.
This is the most common gap and often the quickest to close.
2. More sources mention them
A competitor that appears in two local guides, a newspaper feature and hundreds of recent reviews is a safer recommendation than a place mentioned only on its own website. A 2026 study of 4,776 restaurants, cafés and bars in Bali found that venues with more reviews and more mentions on other sites were much more likely to be named. Star rating made no difference to getting named at all.
Local Falcon found the same concentration in Google’s AI. The top 10% of US restaurants took 74.5% of all visibility, compared with 54% on Google Maps. AI rewards the places that are already talked about.
3. AI cannot read your website
Menus as PDFs or photos, rooms hidden inside a booking widget, heavy scripts or a robots.txt file that blocks AI crawlers can leave AI with little to go on. Your competitor might have a plain page listing every dish or room type. Check whether your site blocks AI crawlers and whether your menu or rooms exist as text.
4. Your facts disagree
If your website says one set of hours, Google another and TripAdvisor a third, AI has less reason to trust any of them. The same goes for your name and address. A competitor whose details match everywhere is the easier choice.
5. Old information is still out there
A temporary closure notice from years ago, a former name or last season’s opening hours can still be found and repeated. AI can even say you are closed if one source still says so. Search your name in ChatGPT and Gemini and read what comes back.
6. They are on the platforms AI uses
ChatGPT relies heavily on listings such as Yelp and TripAdvisor. Google’s AI Overviews lean on Google’s own listings. In Local Falcon’s study, Google’s own listings made up 48.6% of the sources Google’s AI cited for restaurants. A competitor with complete profiles on these platforms gives AI more to work with.
How to find out which reason applies to you
- Write down 5 to 10 questions your guests really ask, without your name in them.
- Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google, and note which competitors are named.
- Open the sources each answer cites. Look at what those pages say about the competitor that they do not say about you.
- Compare your website, listings and reviews against that list.
- Fix the clearest gap first, then ask the same questions again in a few weeks.
Answers change from day to day, so judge by the pattern over several checks. Akkrev runs your questions every week and lists the competitors named and the sources cited. See plans or compare why AI picks one restaurant over another.
Questions
Why do AI assistants recommend my competitors but not me?
Usually because the competitor is better documented for that question. Their website, listings and reviews mention the detail the guest asked for, and more sites mention them. Open the sources AI cites to see the gap.
Is there an AI visibility advantage to being an independent?
Independents can win specific questions, such as a dish, an area or an occasion, because they are often more distinctive. On broad questions chains tend to win because they have more reviews and coverage.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not inside the answers. Recommendations come from what the AI finds and trusts. Some AI products now show ads, but those are labelled and separate.
How long does it take to start being recommended?
Fixing facts and listings can show up within weeks. Building reviews and outside mentions takes months. Track the same questions over time to see the trend.
