Why AI links Booking.com instead of your hotel's website
Updated By Akkrev
ChatGPT recommends your hotel, then links Booking.com. Why it happens, what it costs in commission and what makes AI more likely to link your own site.
Key points
- Being recommended is half the result. Where the link goes decides who takes the booking and the commission.
- In a study of 998 hotels, TripAdvisor and Booking.com were ChatGPT's top sources. Hotel websites were about 7% of citations.
- OTA pages win because they are clear, complete and machine-readable: rooms, prices, policies and reviews on one page.
- Your site loses when rates and rooms hide inside a booking widget AI can't read.
- With OTA commission commonly 15% to 25%, every AI booking that goes via an OTA costs you real margin.
Clearer page
Room types, prices, policies and reviews all in one place.
Visible price
If AI can't read your direct rate, it quotes the OTA's.
Hidden booking path
Booking engines in widgets or frames are hard for AI to see.
More mentions
OTA pages are linked and cited across the web far more than yours.
AI links Booking.com, Expedia or TripAdvisor instead of your hotel’s own website because those pages are often the clearest, most complete and most cited source about your hotel. In a 2026 study of 998 US hotels, TripAdvisor and Booking.com were ChatGPT’s two most cited sources, while hotel websites made up only about 7%. If your own rooms, rates and policies are hidden inside a booking widget, AI has less reason to send guests to you.
What it costs
Commission to online travel agencies for independent hotels is commonly 15% to 25% of the booking. Every guest who finds you through AI but books through an OTA is a direct booking you paid for twice: once in the work to be recommended and again in commission.
Why AI picks the OTA link
- The OTA page is clearer. One page with room types, photos, prices, policies, location and hundreds of reviews.
- Your price isn’t readable. If your direct rate only appears after a date search in a booking engine, AI can’t see it, so it quotes the OTA’s.
- Your booking path is hidden. Booking engines inside widgets, frames or separate domains are hard for AI to follow.
- OTAs are cited everywhere. Their pages are linked from guides and searches far more often than a single hotel site.
- Your site disagrees with itself. Different prices or policies on different pages make it a weaker source.
What the data says by assistant
| Assistant | Top hotel sources in the study | Hotel website share |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | TripAdvisor (27.1%), Booking.com (23.1%) | About 6.9% |
| Gemini | Booking.com, Expedia, HotelPlanner | About 7.9% |
| Google AI Mode | Google’s own pages (99.7%) | Near zero |
Google is different. Its AI sends guests into Google’s own pages, including Google Hotels, where your direct rate can sit next to the OTAs if you connect free booking links.
What makes your own site a better link
- Rooms as text. Each room type with size, beds, view, accessibility and what’s included, on a normal page.
- A readable price. A “from” price per room type and what it includes, so AI isn’t forced to quote an OTA.
- Policies in plain text. Parking, pets, check-in, cancellation, deposits and fees.
- An obvious booking link that works on mobile and doesn’t hide behind pop-ups.
- Consistency. The same facts on your site, your Google profile and your OTA listings.
- No crawler blocks. Make sure your website and booking engine don’t block AI crawlers. Try our free AI crawler check.
How to check what happens now
Ask ChatGPT and Gemini, in a temporary chat, questions you want to win, such as “boutique hotel in York with parking”. When you are named, note which link they give. Then ask “How do I book [your hotel]?” and see whether the answer points to you or an OTA.
For the wider picture, read how to get more direct bookings for your hotel.
Akkrev tracks those questions every week across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok models and shows whether answers link your website or an OTA. For hotels that also want AI agents to complete bookings on their own site, see AI agent booking. See plans.
Questions
Why does ChatGPT send guests to Booking.com instead of my hotel website?
Because Booking.com and TripAdvisor are among its most used sources for hotels. Their pages lay out rooms, prices, policies and reviews clearly. If your own site hides rates and rooms inside a booking widget, AI has less reason to link it.
Can I stop AI from linking OTAs?
No. You can't control which link AI chooses. You can make your own site at least as clear and complete as the OTA listing, with a readable direct price and an obvious booking link, so it is a better source to cite.
Does Google's AI link OTAs too?
Google's AI Mode mostly cites Google's own pages for hotels, including Google Hotels, where OTAs and your free booking link can appear side by side. Connecting free booking links puts your direct rate there.
