Opening a new restaurant or café? How to get AI to know you exist
Updated By Akkrev
How long until a new restaurant or café shows up in Google, Maps and ChatGPT, and what to set up before and after opening so AI can recommend you.
Key points
- AI can't recommend a place it has never read about. New openings start at zero.
- Expect days to weeks for Google Maps, and weeks to months before ChatGPT and Gemini name you reliably.
- The fastest route is a verified Google profile, a simple website and listings live before you open.
- Early reviews and 'new openings' coverage are what move you from known to recommended.
- Check monthly at first, with the same questions, so you can see when AI starts to name you.

- 2

A verified Google Business Profile helps a new restaurant appear in Maps and Search. Indexing your website and being named by an AI assistant are separate events. Timing varies by site, tool and query. The fastest route is having your profile, website and listings live before you open, then earning reviews and local coverage in the first months.
Why new places start at zero
AI assistants recommend venues they can find and trust. A study of 4,776 restaurants, cafés and bars published in 2026 found that review count and mentions on other sites were what predicted being named. A new opening has neither yet. Your job in the first months is to build both as quickly as you honestly can.
Before you open
- Google Business Profile. Create it with the right category and set your future opening date before you verify. Google then shows your profile up to 90 days before you open, so people can find you without turning up to a closed door.
- A simple website. Address, hours, menu as text with prices, booking or order link. One page is enough to start. See do you need a website to be recommended by AI.
- Booking and delivery. OpenTable, Resy, SevenRooms, Deliveroo or Uber Eats pages, set up with the same name, address and hours.
- Other listings. Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp and TripAdvisor, all with identical details.
- Your crawler settings. Make sure your new website does not block AI crawlers. Try our free AI crawler check.
- Local writers and guides. Tell them your opening date, what you’ll be known for and who’s behind it. Openings are news for a short window.
In the first months
- Invite honest feedback from early guests without suggesting what to include. 47% of consumers in BrightLocal’s 2026 survey said they would not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.
- Get onto “new openings” lists in local press, city guides and blogs.
- Say what you’re for. “Neapolitan pizza”, “all-day brunch”, “natural wine bar”. Specific descriptions help AI match you to specific questions.
- Keep every listing in sync as hours and menus settle. Opening weeks are when facts change most.
If someone else used to be at your address
AI often confuses a new venue with the old one. Make sure the previous business is marked permanently closed on Google, Yelp and TripAdvisor, and that no old website still lists your address. Read why ChatGPT says a restaurant is closed.
How long it takes
Check your opening details in Maps, check the index status of your site in Search Console, and record what each assistant says. Repeat the same checks after changes so you can distinguish an isolated answer from a pattern.
How to know when AI has found you
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google two kinds of question every month, in a temporary chat: your name and town, and a guest question you’d like to win, such as “new Italian restaurants in Leeds”. Note when you start to appear.
Akkrev runs those questions every week across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok models, so you can see exactly when you start to be named and what sources AI uses. See AI search optimisation for restaurants or plans.
Questions
How long until a new restaurant shows up in search?
On Google Maps, often within days of verifying your Business Profile. In normal Google search, days to a few weeks once your website is indexed. ChatGPT and Gemini do not publish a timetable for naming a new restaurant. Keep your information current and check relevant guest questions over time.
How do we get a new restaurant into AI recommendations from day one?
You can't guarantee day one, but you can be ready. Have your Google profile, website, booking page and main listings live before you open, tell local food writers your date, and invite honest feedback from early guests.
Should we add our opening date to Google before we open?
Yes. Set it before you verify. Google lets you enter a date up to a year ahead and shows your profile from 90 days before opening.
Why does ChatGPT say the previous restaurant is still at our address?
Old listings and articles are still online. Make sure the old business is marked permanently closed on Google, Yelp and TripAdvisor, and that your own listings are complete. See why ChatGPT says a restaurant is closed.
