# What is AI search? A plain-English guide for hotel, restaurant and café owners

**AI search** is when an AI assistant searches the web for you and writes an answer, instead of showing a list of links. You ask a question in normal words and get a short reply with a few suggestions. Examples include ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Claude.

## How it works, in four steps

1. **A guest asks a question.** "Best Sunday roast near Clapham Common?" or "Boutique hotel in York with parking under £200?"
2. **The AI searches.** It turns the question into one or more web searches and reads the results, listings and reviews it finds.
3. **It writes an answer.** It picks a few places it trusts and explains why, often with links to the sources.
4. **The guest decides.** Many choose from that shortlist without visiting any website.

Some assistants, or some modes, answer from what they already learned instead of searching live. Those answers can be out of date.

## Why it matters for hotels, restaurants and cafés

- **It's common now.** 45% of US consumers used AI for a local business recommendation in 2026, up from 6% a year earlier, according to BrightLocal.
- **There are fewer slots.** A Google search shows many results. An AI answer usually names three to five places.
- **It reads everything about you.** Your website, Google Business Profile, Bing and Apple listings, TripAdvisor, Yelp, booking sites, reviews and local press.
