# Why does AI recommend one restaurant over another?

> Two similar restaurants, one named by ChatGPT and one not. The signals that decide who AI picks, what sets the order and why answers often echo TripAdvisor.

## Key points

- Getting into an AI answer and ranking first in it **follow different rules**.
- To get in, AI needs **documentation**: your own website, plenty of reviews, listed prices and mentions on other sites.
- Star rating barely affects whether you are named. It matters more for **who is listed first**.
- AI often repeats TripAdvisor and Yelp because they are **licensed or heavily cited sources**.
- Most restaurants never appear at all. Studies put that figure between **74% and 86%**.

**How a restaurant ends up first in an AI answer**

1. **Found:** AI finds you on your website, Google, Yelp, TripAdvisor or a local guide.
2. **Understood:** Your cuisine, area, prices and menu are clear and match across sources.
3. **Included:** Enough reviews and mentions to trust you. This is where most venues drop out.
4. **Ranked:** Among the named few, rating and recent praise decide the order.

AI picks the restaurant it can find, understand and trust from several sources. Getting named depends on how well documented a restaurant is. Being named first depends more on its rating and recent reviews. Cooking quality only counts once it shows up in what people write.

## Two restaurants on the same street

Picture two Italian restaurants with similar prices and ratings. Ask ChatGPT for "the best Italian in the area" and only one is named.

| | Restaurant A (named) | Restaurant B (not named) |
|---|---|---|
| Google category | "Italian restaurant" | "Restaurant" |
| Website | Own site with a menu page | Instagram link only |
| Menu | Text with dishes and prices | PDF of a photo |
| Reviews | Many mention "best carbonara in town" | "Lovely evening", "nice staff" |
| Guides | In a local "best Italian" list | Not covered |
| Hours | Same everywhere | Different on Google and the website |
| Booking | OpenTable link on site and Google | Phone only |

B might serve better food. AI recommends what it can read, match and trust.

## What gets a restaurant into the answer

The best evidence so far comes from a 2026 study of every restaurant, café and bar in two parts of Bali. Researchers asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity where to eat 2,208 times. Of 4,776 venues, 85.6% were never named. Even among places with 50 or more ratings, 72.6% never appeared.

Four things made a venue more likely to be named:

- **An own website.** The strongest single factor.
- **Review volume.** More reviews, more chances.
- **Listed prices.** A price level on the listing or prices on the menu.
- **Mentions on other sites.** Guides, blogs and local press.

Star rating made no difference at this stage. The study was funded by Norly, which sells AI visibility tools, so treat it as one strong data point rather than the final word.

Larger studies point the same way. Uberall's 2026 benchmark found 83% of restaurant locations never appear in AI recommendations. Local Falcon tested 10,000 US restaurants in Google's AI and found 74.9% were never shown, against 19.6% that were missing from Google Maps.

## What decides the order

Once a restaurant is in the shortlist, rating starts to matter. In the Bali study, a higher rating made it more likely to be listed first, and so did coverage on more review and blog sites. Uberall found ChatGPT mostly names places averaging 4.3 stars or more, Perplexity 4.1 and Gemini 3.9.

Specific praise helps too. Reviews that mention a dish, an occasion or the area give AI words that match the question. "Great for a birthday dinner near Soho" is more useful to AI than "amazing".

## Why AI often echoes TripAdvisor

Many owners notice ChatGPT's picks look a lot like TripAdvisor's top list. There is a reason. Research by Peec AI in September 2026 found ChatGPT combines its own index with several outside providers, and treats Yelp and TripAdvisor as licensed partners for local data. In Local Falcon's restaurant research, Yelp alone made up 14.1% of the sources AI cited.

So a restaurant that ranks well on TripAdvisor or Yelp often shows up in AI too. A restaurant that ignores those platforms leaves AI with less to work with.

## Michelin, awards and local guides

Awards and expert guides carry weight for questions like "special occasion restaurant in Edinburgh". The Michelin Guide, Time Out, The Infatuation and local newspaper lists are all pages AI can cite. They matter less for everyday questions like "quick lunch near the station", where reviews and listings decide.

## What to take from it

Find the questions you should win, then compare yourself with the restaurants AI names for them. The gaps are usually clear once you look side by side. ## Questions

### What makes ChatGPT recommend one restaurant over another?

Mostly how well documented each restaurant is: an own website, review volume, listed prices and mentions on other sites. Once a restaurant is in the shortlist, rating helps decide the order.

### Why do AI chatbots recommend the same restaurants as TripAdvisor?

TripAdvisor and Yelp are among the sources AI tools cite most for local questions, and research by Peec AI found ChatGPT treats both as licensed data partners. If a restaurant ranks well there, AI often repeats it.

### What star rating does a restaurant need for AI to recommend it?

There is no fixed number. Uberall found ChatGPT mostly recommends places averaging 4.3 stars or more, Perplexity 4.1 and Gemini 3.9. A Bali study found rating had no effect on getting named, only on order.

### Do Michelin stars matter for AI recommendations?

They help with questions about fine dining or special occasions, because Michelin pages are well-known sources. Apple Maps also shows Michelin distinctions. For everyday questions, reviews and listings matter more.
