> AI search is changing how guests choose where to eat and stay. What the 2026 numbers show, why your website traffic may be falling, and what still works.

## Key points

- **Worry a little, act now.** 45% of US consumers used AI for a local business recommendation in the past year, up from 6%.
- **SEO is not dead.** AI assistants build their answers from websites, listings and reviews that ordinary SEO already improves.
- **Traffic can fall while bookings hold.** When Google shows an AI Overview, the top result gets about 58% fewer clicks.
- **AI shortlists, it doesn't list.** It names a handful of places. Being on the shortlist matters more than ranking tenth.
- Start by **checking what AI says about you** today, then fix what it gets wrong.

**What changed and what didn't**

- **Changed:** Guests ask full questions and get 3 to 5 names, often without clicking a website.
- **Changed:** Google's AI answers take clicks from the top search results.
- **Didn't change:** AI still reads your website, Google profile, listings and reviews.
- **Didn't change:** Accurate facts, good reviews and local coverage still win.

Yes, hotels, restaurants and cafés should take AI search seriously, but not panic. Nearly half of US consumers now ask AI for local recommendations, and AI names only a handful of places per question. SEO is not dead. AI assistants build their answers from the same websites, Google profiles, listings and reviews that good local SEO already improves. What has changed is that being on the AI's shortlist now matters as much as ranking in Google's list of links.

## What the numbers say

- **45% of US consumers** used an AI tool for a local business recommendation in the past year, up from 6% the year before (BrightLocal, 1,002 US adults, 2026).
- **31%** had used ChatGPT and **23%** Google's AI Mode for a business recommendation.
- AI is now the **third most used** source of local recommendations, behind Google and Facebook, and ahead of Yelp and TripAdvisor.
- **22% of US consumers** had used AI to help choose a restaurant (DoorDash, 3,001 US consumers, 2026).
- AI-driven traffic to hotel websites grew **almost 200%** between March and August 2026, and **287%** in the UK (Net Affinity and Smarthotel).

## Why your website traffic may be falling

Google now answers many questions directly with AI Overviews and AI Mode. Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords before and after AI Overviews and found the top-ranking page gets about **58% fewer clicks** when an AI Overview appears. Position two loses about half its clicks.

For a hotel or restaurant that means:

- Fewer people click through to read your "things to do" or "best brunch in town" articles.
- More people decide from the AI answer, your Google profile or a booking site.
- Your website visits can drop while enquiries and bookings hold steady.

So judge success by bookings, covers and enquiries, not by website sessions alone. And [track AI referrals in Google Analytics](https://akkrev.com/ai-seo/ai-referral-traffic-in-google-analytics/) so you can see the visits that do come from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

## Is SEO dead?

No. Here is why.

- **Google says so in its own documentation.** There are no special requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in normal Search.
- **AI reads the same sources.** Large studies of AI citations show most point to business websites and listings such as Google, Yelp and TripAdvisor. That is the same ground local SEO covers.
- **ChatGPT searches the web.** When a guest asks for a recommendation, ChatGPT usually runs a live search and reads what it finds.

What has changed is the goal. Ranking somewhere on page one used to be enough to get some clicks. Now the AI picks three to five names and many guests stop there. You need to be one of the names. ## Should you be worried? A quick self-check

You have more to lose if:

- Guests often find you by searching rather than walking past.
- Your menu, rooms or prices are only in PDFs, images or a booking widget.
- Your opening hours or details differ between Google, your website and other listings.
- You have few recent reviews compared with competitors.
- You have never asked ChatGPT or Gemini about your area.

You have less to worry about if most of your trade is walk-in, regulars or long-standing group bookings. Even then, new guests and tourists increasingly start with AI.

## What to do this month

1. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google 5 to 10 questions your guests ask, such as "best dog-friendly pub in Harrogate" or "boutique hotel near Bath Abbey with parking".
2. Write down who gets named and which sites are cited.
3. Check your Google Business Profile, website and main listings say the same things.
4. Make sure your website states the details guests ask about, in plain text.
5. Repeat the same questions every few weeks and watch the trend.

## Questions

### Should restaurants worry about AI search in 2026?

Yes, enough to check. Nearly half of US consumers have used AI for a local recommendation, and AI names only a few places per question. Restaurants that are not named lose those diners without seeing it in their analytics.

### Is SEO dead for hotels and restaurants?

No. AI assistants pull from the same websites, Google profiles, listings and reviews that good local SEO already improves. What changed is that being in the AI's short answer now matters as much as ranking in the list of links.

### Why is my website traffic dropping even though bookings are steady?

Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode answer many questions on the results page. Ahrefs found the top result gets about 58% fewer clicks when an AI Overview is shown. Guests may still find and book you, just with fewer website visits along the way.

### Are people really using ChatGPT to find restaurants?

Yes. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 31% of US consumers had used ChatGPT for a business recommendation, and DoorDash found 22% had used an AI tool to help choose a restaurant.

### Do diners use ChatGPT instead of Yelp?

Increasingly alongside it. BrightLocal found AI is now used more than Yelp or TripAdvisor for local recommendations, but 97% of AI users still check reviews before deciding.
