# How does ChatGPT recommend restaurants?

> Where ChatGPT gets restaurant recommendations from, why Yelp, TripAdvisor, OpenTable and local guides matter, and how to check what it says about you.

## Key points

- ChatGPT searches the web for most restaurant questions, then picks a **short list of 3 to 5** places.
- It draws on its own index, Google and Bing results, and **Yelp and TripAdvisor** as data partners.
- Since August 2026 ChatGPT can **book tables** through OpenTable, Resy and Yelp.
- ChatGPT leans on **listings and directories** more than Gemini, which prefers restaurant websites.
- Check it by asking your guests' real questions and **opening the sources** it cites.

**What happens when a diner asks ChatGPT where to eat**

1. **Question:** "Italian in Brooklyn for six on Monday." Cuisine, area, group size and day.
2. **Search:** ChatGPT runs several searches across its own index, Google, Bing, Yelp and TripAdvisor.
3. **Shortlist:** It keeps the places that clearly match and have enough trusted information.
4. **Answer and booking:** It names a few places with sources and, where available, shows open tables.

ChatGPT searches the web for most restaurant questions, reads listings, review sites and restaurant pages, then names a few places that clearly match the request. It leans on directories such as Yelp and TripAdvisor more than other AI tools do. Since August 2026 it can also show open tables and book them.

## Where ChatGPT gets restaurant information

OpenAI says ChatGPT search can send follow-up queries to other search providers and use your approximate location for local results. It does not publish a full list of sources. Independent research fills some of the gap:

- **Its own index.** OpenAI crawls the web for ChatGPT search.
- **Google and Bing results.** Peec AI found ChatGPT pulls Google web and Maps results through third-party providers, plus Bing.
- **Yelp and TripAdvisor.** Both are treated as licensed partners for local data. Yelp disclosed its data deal with OpenAI in 2026.
- **Restaurant websites.** Menus, hours and booking pages, when they can be read as text.

Yext's study of 6.8 million AI citations found OpenAI's models lean on listings for 48.7% of citations, while Gemini prefers business websites. For restaurants, listings were the largest single source across all tools at 41.6%.

## Booking inside ChatGPT

On 10 August 2026 OpenAI added restaurant reservations to ChatGPT. Diners can see open tables and book through OpenTable worldwide, Resy in the US, and Yelp in the US and Canada. A restaurant that is not bookable on one of these platforms can still be named, but the guest has to leave the chat to book.

## A dining question is more specific than a restaurant name

"Where should I eat in Brooklyn?" asks for broad ideas. "Italian restaurant in Brooklyn for six people on Monday" adds cuisine, group size and a day. ChatGPT looks for places whose pages and listings confirm each detail. If your Monday hours or group bookings are not written down anywhere, you are less likely to be named for that question.

A question with your restaurant's name in it tests whether ChatGPT describes you correctly. A question without it tests whether you get suggested at all. Check both separately.

## Why ChatGPT names some restaurants and not others

The patterns behind most answers are the same across AI tools. Restaurants with an own website, plenty of reviews, listed prices and mentions on other sites get named more often. Rating then helps decide who comes first. Our comparison of [why AI picks one restaurant over another](https://akkrev.com/compare/why-ai-picks-one-restaurant-over-another/) covers this in detail.

## How to check what ChatGPT says about you

1. Write down 5 to 10 questions your guests would really ask, with cuisine, area and occasion.
2. Ask each one in ChatGPT with search on, signed out or in a temporary chat.
3. Note who is named, in what order, and whether you appear.
4. Open every source it cites. Look for wrong hours, an old menu or a closed listing.
5. Repeat the same questions a week later. Answers vary, so one result proves little.

[Akkrev's restaurant plans](https://akkrev.com/ai-seo-for-restaurants/) run these questions every week through the models' APIs and show who gets named and which sources are cited. They do not copy every consumer ChatGPT answer exactly. See our [method](https://akkrev.com/methodology/) for the limits.

## Questions

### Does ChatGPT use Google reviews for restaurants?

Research by Peec AI found ChatGPT pulls Google Maps listings through a third-party provider, alongside its own index and licensed Yelp and TripAdvisor data. OpenAI has not published a full list, so check the sources shown in each answer.

### Does ChatGPT always recommend the highest-rated restaurant?

No. Rating helps decide the order once a restaurant is in the shortlist, but getting in depends more on reviews, listings, an own website and mentions on other sites.

### Are people using ChatGPT to find restaurants?

Yes. Uberall found 15.2% of consumers already name AI as their main way to discover restaurants, and ChatGPT added in-chat table booking in August 2026.

### Why does ChatGPT show the wrong menu or opening hours?

It may be reading an old listing, a third-party page or a PDF it cannot read well. Open the cited source and compare it with your website and listings.
