# How to appear in Google AI Overviews for restaurant searches

> How Google AI Overviews and AI Mode pick restaurants, why most never appear, and what owners can check on Google, their website and review sites to get named.

## Key points

- Google's AI Overview now sits **above the map** for many restaurant searches and names only a few places.
- In a test of 10,000 US restaurants, **74.9% never appeared** in Google's AI, against 19.6% missing from Maps.
- Almost half of what Google's AI cites is **Google's own listings**, so your Business Profile comes first.
- A **website** and a **claimed profile** both raised the chance of being shown.
- Many reviews alone are not enough. Restaurants with over 1,000 reviews were still **left out 70.9%** of the time.

**Where Google's AI gets restaurant information**

- **Google Business Profile:** Category, hours, menu, photos, attributes and reviews. Google's own listings were 48.6% of citations.
- **Review and listing sites:** Yelp, TripAdvisor and booking platforms. Yelp alone was 14.1% of citations in Local Falcon's research.
- **Your website:** Menu as text, opening hours, location details and booking link.
- **Guides and articles:** "Best ramen in Leeds" lists, local press and food blogs.

To appear in Google AI Overviews for restaurant searches, Google needs to understand your restaurant from its own listings first, then confirm it on your website and on review sites. A claimed, complete Google Business Profile, a website with your menu as text and accurate Yelp and TripAdvisor listings are the base. Mentions in local guides help you stand out.

## Why AI Overviews matter for restaurants

For searches like "best ramen in Leeds" or "restaurants open late near me", Google often shows an AI Overview above the results. It names a few places and says why. The map pack still appears, but the summary is the first thing people read.

That makes the AI Overview harder to get into than the map. Local Falcon tested 10,000 US restaurants in May 2026, at nine points around each one. 74.9% never appeared in Google's AI recommendations at any point. Only 19.6% were missing from Google Maps. A restaurant is almost four times more likely to be invisible in Google's AI than on the map.

## Where the information comes from

Local Falcon counted the sources behind more than 657,000 AI citations:

- **Google's own listings** made up 48.6%. Your Google Business Profile is the biggest single input.
- **Yelp** made up 14.1% of citations in the same research, more than TripAdvisor, Facebook, Reddit and Instagram together.
- **Websites, guides and other platforms** made up the rest.

Yext's separate study of 6.8 million AI citations found Google's Gemini leans more on business websites than ChatGPT does. So your own site still matters, even when Google has a listing for you.

## What raised the chance of being shown

**A claimed Google Business Profile.** 26.1% of claimed listings were visible in Google's AI, against 17.9% of unclaimed ones.

**An own website.** Visibility rose from 16.7% for restaurants with no website to 26.2% for those with one.

**Clear, matching details.** A specific category such as "Ramen restaurant" rather than "Restaurant", full hours, price range, and attributes like outdoor seating or vegetarian options.

**Reviews that mention dishes and occasions.** "Best tonkotsu in Leeds" in a review gives Google words that match the search.

## What did not guarantee a place

Review volume alone was not enough. Restaurants with more than 1,000 Google reviews were still left out 70.9% of the time, close to the rate for places with a few hundred. Visibility was also very concentrated. The top 10% of restaurants captured 74.5% of all AI visibility, against 54% on Google Maps.

So being popular is not the same as being visible. The restaurants Google's AI names are the ones it can describe clearly for the exact search.

## How to check your restaurant

1. Search the questions your diners ask, signed out and on a phone, for example "best brunch in [area]".
2. Note whether an AI Overview appears and which restaurants it names.
3. Open the sources linked in the Overview and see what they say about the places named.
4. Compare your Google Business Profile with theirs: category, hours, menu, photos, attributes.
5. Check that your website shows your menu and hours as text.
6. Repeat the same searches every week. AI Overviews change often, so look for the pattern.

AI Overviews and AI Mode can give different answers, so check both by hand. Akkrev tracks your guest questions every week in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok models and shows the sources behind each answer. It does not sample AI Overviews directly. ## Questions

### How do I get my restaurant in Google AI Overviews?

Start with a complete, claimed Google Business Profile with the right category, hours and menu. Then make sure your website has your menu as text, keep Yelp and TripAdvisor accurate, and earn mentions in local guides.

### Is Google AI Overviews the same as AI Mode?

No. AI Overviews appear at the top of normal search results. AI Mode is a separate chat-style search. Both use Google's listings and the web, but results can differ.

### Do restaurants without a website appear in AI Overviews?

Sometimes, but less often. Local Falcon found 16.7% visibility for restaurants without a website against 26.2% for those with one.
